Gliwice Urban Planning
Scope of the project:
Development of an urban and landscape concept, design of public and recreational spaces, pedestrian and cycling routes, and ecological solutions for green areas and allotment gardens.
Project description:
This competition proposal was developed in response to discussions surrounding the planned Noworybnicka Avenue in Gliwice and concerns about the potential loss of green areas and allotment gardens. Rather than treating infrastructure and nature as opposing interests, the project aimed to create a solution that benefits all users while preserving the site's existing environmental value.
The concept retains the entire existing tree stand and allotment gardens while introducing a pedestrian and cycling route that connects residents with previously inaccessible green spaces. The proposal was developed following consultations with local residents and allotment holders, whose feedback helped shape the design.
A 3-metre-wide pedestrian and cycling path runs through the site, accompanied by recreational areas, community gardens, playgrounds, activity zones, barbecue pavilions, and spaces dedicated to senior citizens. Quiet relaxation zones, including woodland meadows with loungers and glass meditation pavilions for yoga and mindfulness, create opportunities for rest within nature.
Additional public amenities include outdoor gaming areas, sports facilities, climbing structures for children, accessible exercise zones, coworking pavilions, and multifunctional container pavilions designed for community events, open-air cinema screenings, and social gatherings.
Sustainability was a key aspect of the proposal. Beyond preserving existing greenery, the project introduces flower meadows, insect habitats, bee shelters, public composting stations, and community food-sharing points for distributing surplus harvests. The cycling path was designed using luminescent paving materials that absorb daylight and emit light after dark, reducing the need for traditional street lighting and lowering energy consumption.
The project demonstrates how urban infrastructure, biodiversity, recreation, and community needs can coexist within a single integrated landscape, creating a more sustainable and inclusive public environment for the city of Gliwice.
